야스민의 카메라는 춤을 추듯 흔들린다.
예멘에서 온 야스민과 친구가 되고 일상을 담은 영화를 함께 만들기로 약속했었다. 하지만 난민 심사에서 떨어진 그녀가 갑작스레 제주를 떠나게 되면서 공동 작업은 취소된다. 카메라에 담긴 야스민의 편지를 전달하며 영화를 완성해 나가기로 마음먹었을 때, 삼나무가 벌목된 숲, 두 번째 공항의 건설 예정 부지, 도청 앞 천막을 오가던 친구들이 보였다. 그들의 움직임이 만들어 낸 지도를 따라가니 곧 사라질 풍경들과 돌아올 곳을 잃은 존재들이 있었다.
연출의도: 섬에 두 번째 공항을 짓기 위한 공사가 시작될 무렵, 내전 중인 예멘을 떠난 야스민은 여러 나라를 거쳐 제주도에 도착했다. 비슷한 시기에 들어온 예멘인 549명의 난민 신청은 한국사회의 큰 쟁점이 되었고 이들을 향한 차별과 혐오에 지쳐가던 그녀를 만나 우리는 친구가 되었다. 사람이 머물고 떠나는 것이 다른 누군가의 판단으로 결정된다는 것을 받아들일 수 없었던 나는 작은 변화라도 만들기 위해 야스민과의 공동작업을 계획했지만, 그녀가 갑작스레 육지로 떠나며 작업은 무산되었다. 제주에서의 일상을 기록하던 야스민의 카메라에 남겨진 편지는 또 다른 머물지 못할 존재들과 그들의 자리를 지키려는 친구들에게 전해진다. 편지가 전해지는 길 위에서, 그들의 공간에서 오가는 미묘한 파장을 영화로 기록해보고 싶었다. 사건으로 남거나 구호로 외쳐지기 전, 그 자리에 있기에 느낄 수 있는 교류, 관계 그리고 상호작용 같은 것 말이다.

Map without Island

A friend leaves, a letter delivered.
After her brief stay in Jeju island in Korea a Yemeni refugee leaves a letter behind. The film follows the letter as it is delivered encountering bodies resisting militarization and the destruction of the island’s unique ecosystem. Trajectories of their movements become a new map drawn from the perspective of islands.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
From the beginning the film was planned to be a collaborative project. Yasmin, a refugee from Yemen, and I wanted to share our perspectives on the life of Jeju Island. After her sudden departure I discovered a message in the camera she rented from me. I felt the strong need to remember Yasmin’s absence collectively and connect our relations of memory in the form of film letter. Islanders who received the letter were invited to tell their stories in the way they decided; they answered with forms of improvised body movement, walks through forests and along ocean shores, visiting protest sites and traveling together. This made the film a map-like composition collaboratively drawn between the people who resonated with the life of refugee.
