The message, recorded by a Yemeni refugee during her brief stay on Jeju Island, is passed on to others who remain.
Their responses—walking through forests, coastlines, protest sites—trace a map shaped by movement, resistance, and memory.
Amid vanishing landscapes and unresolved belonging, a new cartography begins to emerge.
This is a letter-film made from absence, improvised gestures, and place-based connection.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
As debates surrounding the construction of Jeju’s second airport intensified, Yasmin arrived on the island after fleeing war-torn Yemen. One of 549 Yemeni asylum seekers who became the focus of national controversy, she grew increasingly weary from public scrutiny and discrimination. We became friends and began planning a collaborative project. But she left the island suddenly—and in the camera she had been using, I found a message.
I wanted to remember her absence collectively. I delivered the letter to people on the island—friends who resist erasure in their own ways. They responded through improvised gestures: walking, moving, traveling along the sea. These resonances remained in the film. This work is an attempt to remember the subtle exchanges and tensions that occur before things become “events” or “slogans”—to hold onto the affective presence that only those who were there could feel.

시놉시스
제주에 잠시 머물렀던 예멘 출신의 난민 야스민이 남긴 영상 속 메시지는, 섬의 다른 이들에게로 전해진다.
그들은 숲과 바다, 공사 예정지와 시위 현장을 걸으며 각자의 방식으로 편지에 응답한다.
떠난 이의 흔적과 머물 수 없는 존재들의 리듬 속에서, 하나의 지도가 그려진다.
이 영화는 기억과 부재, 즉흥적 움직임과 장소 기반의 저항을 따라 만들어진 편지-영화다.
연출의도
두 번째 공항 건설을 둘러싼 갈등이 점점 가시화되던 시기, 내전 중인 예멘을 떠난 야스민이 제주에 도착했다. 한국 사회에 큰 반향을 일으킨 난민 신청자 549명 중 한 명이었던 그녀는 연이은 차별과 피로 속에서 점점 지쳐갔다. 친구가 된 우리는 공동작업을 시작했지만, 머무를 수 없었던 그녀는 결국 제주를 떠나게 되었다. 남겨진 카메라 안에는, 편지가 있었다.
야스민의 부재를 함께 기억하고 싶었다. 그래서 나는 그 편지를 섬에서 저마다의 방식으로 저항하며 살아가는 친구들에게 전달했다. 몸짓으로, 걷기로, 바다를 따라 이동하면서 이들은 응답했고, 그 과정은 영화 속 파장으로 남았다. 이 작업은 사건이 되기 전, 구호가 되기 전의 정동과 교류, 그리고 그 장소에 있었기에 가능한 감각을 기억하기 위한 시도이기도 하다.
