Silence Traces Water Beneath (2026) grows out of long-term field research into Jeju Island’s groundwater and the sounds of its volcanic landscape. Rainwater seeps through layers of lava and underground caves before resurfacing as springs. Following these hidden waterways, the film moves across volcanic terrain and through landscapes transformed by military infrastructure and tourism development. These places carry traces of the Jeju April 3 massacres alongside the island’s ongoing ecological changes. Moving between the surface and what lies beneath, the work follows water and human bodies across different scales of time. As histories of violence become entangled with ecological change, the landscape emerges not merely as a backdrop but as a witness to what remains at the edges of political and cinematic visibility.
Departing from the desire to hear what cannot be heard, the installation unfolds through multiple screens and sound pieces dispersed across the exhibition space. Fragments of field research emerge as partial traces rather than a continuous narrative, allowing visitors to encounter the slow temporality of groundwater through shifting relations between images, sounds, and their own movements. Attending to memories and relationships that have yet to take clear form, the work explores the possibility of shared sensibility and care through worlds that briefly come into being.

《침묵은 물을 더듬으며 아래로》(2026)는 제주도의 지하수와 화산 지형, 소리에 대한 오랜 현장 연구에서 출발한다. 빗물은 용암층과 지하 동굴을 통과해 스며들고, 다시 샘물로 지표에 솟아오른다. 영상은 이렇게 숨겨진 물길을 따라 화산 지형을 가로지르며, 군사시설과 관광 개발로 변형된 풍경들을 지나간다. 이 장소들에는 제주 4·3 학살의 흔적과 섬에서 지속되고 있는 생태적 변화가 함께 남아 있다. 카메라는 지표 위와 아래를 오가며 서로 다른 시간의 규모를 가로질러 물과 인간의 몸을 따라간다. 폭력의 역사가 생태적 변화와 얽히는 가운데, 풍경은 단순한 배경이 아니라 정치적·영화적 가시성의 가장자리에 남아 있는 것들을 목격하는 증인으로 나타난다.
들을 수 없는 것을 듣고자 하는 욕망에서 출발한 이 설치 작업은 전시 공간 곳곳에 흩어져 배치된 여러 스크린과 사운드 작업을 통해 펼쳐진다. 현장 연구의 파편들은 연속적인 서사가 아닌 부분적인 흔적으로 드러나며, 관객은 이미지와 소리, 자신의 움직임 사이에서 변화하는 관계를 통해 지하수의 느린 시간성을 마주하게 된다. 아직 뚜렷한 형태를 갖추지 않은 기억과 관계에 귀 기울이며, 이 작업은 잠시 모습을 드러내는 세계들을 통해 감각과 돌봄을 공유할 가능성을 탐색한다.
